Privacy Policy
The short version
- You can use Pink Sky Tracker without an account. The app creates a random guest ID so your places and settings can be saved.
- We use your location only while the app is open, to forecast the sky where you are. The app never uses location in the background.
- No ads. We don't sell your data and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- Your sky reports and photos are private. Location data is removed from photos before upload.
- You can download or delete your data at any time in the app: Profile → Delete account.
1. Who we are
Pink Sky Tracker (the "app") is published by Depentra Ltd, United Kingdom ("we", "us", "our"). We decide how and why the personal data described here is used, which makes us the "controller" of that data under data protection laws.
This policy covers the Pink Sky Tracker apps for iOS and Android and this website. Questions or requests: james@depentra.com.
2. What we collect and why
| Data | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Guest ID: a random identifier created when you first open the app | Always | To save your places and settings, apply plan limits and protect the service from abuse |
| Location: your device's precise location | Only if you allow it, and only while the app is open | To forecast sunrise and sunset color where you are (see Location) |
| Saved places: name, region, country, coordinates and time zone | When you save a place | To show forecasts and send alerts for those places |
| Place searches: the text you type in search | When you search | To find matching places. Searches go to Mapbox; we don't store them |
| Account details: your email address, or the identifier and email Apple or Google share when you sign in with them; an optional display name | Only if you create an account | To sign you in and keep your data across devices |
| Preferences: units, time format, appearance, language, the interests you pick during onboarding, and your analytics choice | When you set them | To personalize the app |
| Alert settings and notification data: your alert choices, push token, device platform, app version, and a record of the alerts we sent | If you turn on alerts | To send sunrise and sunset alerts, avoid duplicates and fix delivery problems |
| Sky reports: how the sky looked, optional notes and photo, the time and place, and the forecast and weather at that time | Only when you submit a report | To keep your private sky journal and to measure and improve forecast accuracy |
| Purchases: your plan, subscription status, product, renewal and expiry dates, and store transaction identifiers | If you subscribe or restore purchases | To unlock Pink Sky+. Apple or Google handle payment; we never see your card details |
| Usage data: screens viewed and features used, linked to your random app ID, plus device type, operating system and app version | Unless you turn it off | To understand which features work and improve the app. Never includes your coordinates, email, notes or photos |
| Crash reports: error details, device model, operating system and app version | When the app crashes or hits an error | To find and fix bugs. Coordinates, emails and tokens are removed before sending |
| Technical data: IP address and request details | When the app talks to our servers | Security, rate limiting and abuse prevention |
We don't collect contacts, health data, browsing history or advertising identifiers, and the app contains no advertising.
3. Location
- The app asks only for "while using the app" location access. It never requests or uses background location.
- Location is optional. You can search for a place instead, and every feature still works.
- To make a forecast, the app sends coordinates to our forecast server. The server rounds them to a grid of about 5 km before requesting weather data, and cached forecasts are stored by grid cell, not by person.
- Your current location is stored on our servers only if you turn on alerts for "Current location", and then only rounded to about 5 km.
- Sunrise, sunset and sun position are calculated on your device.
- Photos you attach to sky reports are re-encoded on your device before upload, which removes GPS and other embedded metadata.
4. Legal bases
We offer Pink Sky Tracker worldwide. Where data protection laws such as the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Brazil's LGPD or Thailand's PDPA require a legal basis, we rely on:
- Contract: to provide the app and Pink Sky+ as you request them (forecasts, saved places, alerts, sync and purchases).
- Consent: for device location, notifications and photo access, which you grant in your device's permission prompts and can withdraw at any time in your device settings.
- Legitimate interests: to keep the service secure, prevent abuse, fix crashes, improve forecast accuracy and understand how features are used. You can turn usage analytics off at any time.
- Legal obligations: to keep records the law requires, for example for tax.
5. Service providers
We don't sell or rent personal data, and we don't share it for advertising. We use the providers below to run the app. They may use the data only to provide their service to us, or as their own privacy policies describe for services you use directly (such as Apple and Google).
| Provider | Purpose | Data involved | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in, file storage and server functions | The account data described above | India (Mumbai) |
| Open-Meteo | Weather forecast data | Rounded coordinates (about 5 km) of the places being forecast. Requests come from our servers, not your device | European Union |
| Mapbox | Maps and place search | Search text, the map area you view, IP address, device and app information | United States |
| RevenueCat | Subscription management | Random app ID, purchase and subscription status, store receipts | United States |
| Apple and Google | App distribution, payments, sign-in and push notification delivery | As described in their privacy policies | Worldwide |
| Expo | Sending push notifications | Push token and alert text | United States |
| Email delivery provider | Sending sign-in codes | Your email address and the code | United States |
| PostHog | Usage analytics (optional) | Random app ID, usage events, device and app information | United States |
| Sentry | Crash reporting | Error details, device and app information | United States |
We may also disclose data when the law requires it, to protect the rights and safety of users or others, or as part of a business transfer such as a merger or sale, in which case this policy continues to protect your data.
6. International transfers
Our providers process data in countries other than yours, including India (Mumbai), the United States and the European Union. Where the law requires it, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses in our providers' data protection terms.
7. How long we keep data
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Account and guest data: saved places, preferences, alert settings, notification history, sky reports and photos | Until you delete it or delete your account |
| Cached forecasts (by grid cell, not linked to you) | Up to 3 days |
| IP addresses in rate-limit counters | Up to 2 days |
| Subscription event log | 180 days |
| Usage analytics | Up to 12 months |
| Crash reports | Up to 90 days |
| Server backups | Up to 30 days |
When you delete your account, we delete your account, email address, saved places, preferences, alert settings, push tokens, notification history, photos and report notes. We keep sky report statistics with nothing that identifies you: the rating you gave, the forecast score and model version, the weather at the time, the event time, and an approximate location rounded to a grid of roughly 5 to 10 km. These records can no longer be linked to you and help us improve forecast accuracy. Purchase records kept by Apple, Google and RevenueCat follow their own retention rules and tax laws. See Delete your account.
Guest data is tied to the app on your device. To remove it from our servers, use Profile → Delete account before you uninstall the app.
8. Your choices and rights
- Location, notifications, camera and photos: allow or deny them in your device settings at any time.
- Usage analytics: turn off Profile → Share anonymous usage data.
- Get a copy of your data: Profile → Delete account → Request a copy of my data downloads it immediately as a file.
- Delete your data: Profile → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and permanent.
Depending on where you live (for example the UK, the European Union, Brazil, Thailand, or California and other US states), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or port your data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. You can also complain to your local data protection authority; in the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office. California residents have the right to know, delete and correct their data and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights; we don't sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
To make a request, email james@depentra.com. We may need to confirm that the account is yours, and we respond within 30 days.
9. Children
Pink Sky Tracker is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Security
Data is encrypted in transit. Each account can access only its own records, photos are stored privately, and sign-in sessions are kept in your device's secure storage. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we work to protect your data and limit what we collect.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. We will change the effective date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app before they take effect.
